Every August, trucks get loaded up, dorm rooms get assembled from scratch, and Wyoming families send their kids off to the University of Wyoming, a local community college, or somewhere a little farther from home. It is one of those moments that is exciting and a little overwhelming all at once, and there is always a long list of things to figure out before move-in weekend.

Insurance is rarely on that list. But it probably should be.

Here is the honest truth. Most families assume their existing coverage follows their student out the door. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it does not. And the gap between those two situations is where a lot of people find themselves in a tough spot after something goes wrong.

We put this guide together so that does not happen to you.

What Your Homeowners Policy Actually Covers Off Campus

This is the one that surprises people the most.

If your student is living in a dorm, your homeowners policy may extend some coverage to their belongings, but the limits are often much lower than people expect. Many policies cap off-premises personal property coverage at around ten percent of your total personal property limit. If your home policy covers $100,000 in personal property, that means your student's laptop, bike, AirPods, and everything else in the dorm might only have $10,000 in coverage, and that is before your deductible comes into play.

If they move into an off-campus apartment, the situation changes again. At that point, your homeowners policy likely covers very little or nothing at all for their belongings, because they are no longer considered a resident of your household in the way the policy defines it.

Renters insurance fills that gap. It is one of the most affordable policies out there, often running less than a couple hundred dollars a year, and it covers their personal belongings, provides liability protection if someone gets hurt in their space, and even covers additional living expenses if something forces them out of their apartment temporarily.

If your student is living off campus, renters insurance is not optional. It is just smart.

The Auto Question: Is the Car Covered?

This one has a few different answers depending on your situation.

If your student is taking a car to school: Your existing auto insurance policy likely still covers them as long as they are listed on the policy. But you need to let your insurance company know the vehicle's new primary location, because garaging a car in a different city or state can affect your rate and, in some cases, your coverage. A quick call handles it.

If your student is leaving the car at home: You may actually be eligible for a discount. Some carriers offer a "student away at school" discount when a young driver on your policy is attending school more than a certain distance from home and does not have regular access to a vehicle. Worth asking about.

If your student does not have a car but occasionally drives yours when they are home: They are probably still covered under your policy as a listed household member, but it is worth confirming how that works, especially if they have been away long enough that their status on the policy is unclear.

If they are driving someone else's car at school: This is where it gets complicated. Coverage in that situation depends on the vehicle owner's policy, your policy, and how the accident happened. There is no universal answer, which is exactly why it is worth a conversation with your agent before something happens.

Life Insurance: Worth Thinking About Earlier Than You Think

This is not a fun topic. We know. But it is worth a paragraph.

If your student is starting to build financial independence, taking on student loans, or has anyone who depends on them financially, even in a small way, a basic life insurance policy is worth considering. Term life insurance for a young, healthy person is often surprisingly affordable, and locking in a rate when they are young and healthy is one of the smartest financial moves they can make.

At minimum, it is a conversation worth having while they are home for the summer, before life gets busier and the moment passes.

A Few More Things Worth Knowing

Liability coverage matters more than people realize. If your student accidentally causes damage to their apartment, injures someone, or gets sued for something that happens in their space, liability coverage on a renters policy can protect them from serious financial consequences. Without it, they are personally on the hook.

Their stuff adds up faster than you think. Do a quick mental inventory: laptop, phone, headphones, gaming console, bike, clothes, textbooks. For most students, that is several thousand dollars of personal property sitting in a dorm room or apartment with minimal security. A renters policy covers all of it.

Going to school out of state changes the conversation. Different states have different insurance requirements and different carrier networks. If your student is heading to school outside Wyoming, it is a good time to review your policies with an agent who can walk you through how coverage follows them across state lines.
